Q: Are your serums preserved?
OkokoCosmétiquesplants-based serums containing watery liquid such asL’Élixir de Clarté, L’Élixir De Pureté andL’Élixir De Pureté PRESTIGE EDITION are all preserved using a combination of natural and broad-spectrum preservatives. The reason we believe it is important to use them in water containing product is because preservatives do serve a purpose which is to protect you from bacteria, fungus and yeast.
Q: Why are you using preservatives?
A: The problem is that there is a common belief that preservatives are dangerous and must be avoided, but the problem is that… We have seen it before many times. Brands selling unpreserved or not properly preserved cosmetics resulting in customers complaints and products recall. When water is introduced into a product (with no preservation), it can quickly grow various undesirable microorganisms such microbes, bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Do you want to take that risk? Most of us probably don’t want to. Preservatives do serve a purpose which is to protect consumers from bacteria, fungus, and yeast. At OkokoCosmétiques we do this to ensure quality and safety to our customers as all products containing water MUST be preserved to prevent mold, yeast and fungal growth. We don’t ever want to risk the well-being of consumers and abide by strict guidelines for safety. Our serums containing water have been challenged tested by external labs and have passed microbial testing. Our anhydrous oil-based products (that don’t require contact with water) do not contain any preservatives. Oils and butters don’t provide the kind of environment that are conducive to microbial growth, but we do use antioxidants like Vitamin E and rosemary extract to prevent rancidity.
Q: Do your products contain essential oils?
Yes. Our products contain low % of therapeutic grade organic essential oils for their potent properties as well as to provide the natural fragrance to our products as we do not use synthetic fragrances. We follow the International Fragrance Association (IFRA)essential oils dermal limit concentration for leave on products to ensure that our products will not trigger sensitization, irritation or photosensitivity.
Q: I don’t want to use preservatives, what are my options?
If you don’t wish to use preservatives you can use our anhydrous products. These include our face oils such as Les 16 Précieux andL’Élixir de Manuka. You can also use the Sublime Balm, Secret Du Dragon Lip Serum as well as our clay masks D’Tox Noire and La Boue De Beauté, as they are in powder form and contain no water. As long as you are not using a product that contains water you can refrain from using preservatives. However, if water is going to be used in a product, then a preservative is needed.

We want to make sure you’re choosing the correct OkokoCosmétiques routine for your skin. You can go to our website to find out which products are most suitable by booking a personalized consultation with one of our formulators and beauty experts to get a custom Okoko routine to meet your specific skincare needs.
Q: What products do you recommend for oily and acne prone skin?
Although we ideally prefer to recommend products on a case by case basis as every person can have slightly different skin conditions, we usually recommend our Purifying Collection. This includes La D’tox Noire (purifying detox mask),L’Élixir De Puretéserum, and theL’Élixir de Manuka oil-serum. Using a combination of these products will help to reduce the appearance of breakouts and blemishes using ingredients that are known to have purifying and antimicrobial properties.
Q: What products do you recommend for dehydrated, dry or mature skin?
We recommend using a combination of products that will both hydrate and moisturize your skin. If your skin is dehydrated, we always recommend using products that will quench your skin such as BeautéMajestique, L’Élixir De Pureté, L’Élixir De Pureté PRESTIGE EDITION and La Perle Enviro Defense Hydrating Mist for more mature skin. They contain the added cosmetic actives that provide powerful environmental defense and concentrated antioxidant protection. We also recommend applying a moisturizer on top of these serums to provide extra nutrition and lock in hydration with an occlusive layer. This can be done by using Les 16 Précieux Face Oil as well as Sublime Balm. They both contain high-performance botanicals with known anti-aging properties such as seabuckthorn oil, carrot resin and fermented willow bark for increased hydration. These various products contain powerful antioxidantsand cosmeceuticals such as bakuchiol, dragon’s blood extract, beech tree bud extract, cosmetic prebiotics, white lupin, lycopene, tomato oil, prickly pear, CoQ10, astaxanthin and liposomes for increased benefits and a better delivery system of the precious ingredients. These are carefully selected ingredients that we have researched for you andhave been shown to deliver comprehensive results to your skin which we know you will love!
Q: How do I use Okoko clay masks?
Our clay masks La D’tox Noire and La Boue de Beauté both come in a dry powder form. This allows for you to customize it according to your needs. You can activate your clay mask with water or aloe vera on a one to one ratio. You can also combine it with unpasteurized honey, greek yogurt and avocado for a deeper hydrating effect and for added benefits and results. The ideal consistency is a mud (paste) like texture (that is not runny) so that you can paint it on using a clean facial brush. Leave the mask on anywhere between 5-10 minutes when mixed with water alone, or you can leave it on for up to an hour when mixed with unpasteurized honey for example. Rinse off with warm water and gently massage it when rinsing it off for a gentle exfoliating facial polish effect. You skin will be then ready to better absorb and utilize the high-performance ingredients in your precious serums.
Q: How do I use Okoko serums?
Our serums vary in application methods but are all very concentrated therefore you only need a little bit to obtain good results. For L’Élixir De Clarté, you would apply 2-3 pumps on a cotton pad and apply it across your face and décolleté similar to a toner application. You can use L’Élixir De Clartéas a chemical exfoliant and it also performs very well as a makeup remover or after masking (to remove any light residue). If you are looking for a powerful brightening routine, you can use a vitamin C serum (with a low ph) after using L’Élixir De Clarté, which works to increase the efficacy of your serums due to the mild exfoliation allowing a better penetration.
Q: How do I useL’Élixir De Pureté, white label?
Shake well before each use. Apply 1-2 pumps of serum on clean skin morning and evening. Smooth evenly over your face and neck.
Q: How do I useL’Élixir De Pureté, PRESTIGE EDITION?
Shake well before each use. Apply 1-2 pumps into your hand and then massage it into your face and décolleté and finish by pressing it in.
Q: How do you recommend usingLes 16 Précieux and L’Élixir de Manuka
Both serumsare applied in the same way. Apply a drop of oil on each fingertip on one hand and press against the other hand’s fingertips and then proceed to massage and press into your skin. You can use our face oils as stand-alone products (after cleansing), or together with one of our water-based serums or as the last step in your routine, as a moisturiser. Use once or twice a day as needed. Our face oils are versatile and can also be used together with a mist or water-based serum for a deeper hydrating effect. Spot treatment: You can also useL’Élixir de Manuka as a spot treatment on specific breakouts and blemishes.
Q: What is the difference between L’Élixir de Clarté and L’Élixir De Pureté?
L’Élixir De Clarté is a mild brightening chemical exfoliant that uses 5% AHA’s naturally sourced from blueberries, sugar cane and citrus to gently remove dead skin cells. This Elixir contains naturally derived glycolic acid, lactic acid and citric acid. You can use L’Élixir De Clarté in your night skincare routine (with a cotton pad in the same way you would apply a toner) to gently exfoliate skin and removes dead skin cells, revealing new, fresh, smoother and brighter looking skin. By doing so, it also helps to increase the efficacy of your serums applied after. If you are new to AHA’s or haven’t used L’Élixir De Clartébefore, use it every other day to allow for your skin to adjust. If you are also using L’Élixir de Pureté, Sang du Dragon serum in your routine, use it in the morning and L’Élixir De Clartéin the evening. L’Élixir de Pureté, Sang Du Dragon is an elevated oil-free high-performance serum designed to clarify, bring deep hydration and improve problematic skin. It uses high-performance ingredients known for their purifying properties like Dragon’s blood resin extract, niacinamide, willow bark and glucosamine which also work together to provide an effective anti-inflammatory treatment. L’Élixir de Puretéreduces the appearance of breakouts and blemishes, helps to diminish the appearance of dark spots and smooths fine lines and wrinkles. It also softens and smoothes skin and improves irregular skin texture. L’Élixir de Pureté is fast absorbing and can be used both morning and night underneath your favourite moisturizer or preferred face oil. We offer 2 different versions of L’Élixir de Pureté, including the original, initial version called White Label and our recent, elevated version called The Prestige Edition or Red Label. Learn more about our labels here.
Q: What is the difference between your black, white and red labels?
Each of our labels is distinct and caters to different skin needs and concerns. Our black label is Okoko classic brightening and radiance collection. Our white label is our elevated purifying and clarifying collection. Finally, our red label – Prestige Edition is our premium label for luxury performance designed to prevent signs of aging and for environmental protection.
Q: Can I use AHA’s before sun exposure?
We don’t recommend using AHA’s prior to sun exposure as it may make your skin more sensitive to UV rays which is why we recommend using them in the evening. Please note that before sun exposure, it is recommended to apply sunscreen on the regions where the product containing AHA was applied. In case of sensitivity to AHA, use of product should be limited in frequency or duration. Always use a high-quality mineral sunscreen when in the sun and when you’re incorporating AHA’s in your skincare routine.
Q: Can I use the Sublime balm before sun exposure?
Although the Sublime balm contains many ingredients that are favorable prior to sun exposure (loads of antioxidants called carotenoids), it also has a small amount of naturally derived oil soluble AHAs. The amount is too low for irritation to occur but as a preventive gesture, we prefer to suggest using Sublime after sun exposure. Use it every day on the face and body after sun exposure to boost your tan and summer glow. You can use it in the daytime if you are not particularly going to expose your skin to the sun. Sublime balm is truly multi-purpose and can also be used as a night balm, eye balm, daily moisturiser (mix together with your favorite oil) and also as a cleanser (the balm emulsifies when in contact with water). You can do so much with Sublime!
