How to brighten hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and dark spots quickly and effectively?

With the summer (and our tan lines) slowly fading away, we wish our sunspots would also bid us adieu. Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause over 90% of visible skin aging, including the dark spots (aka hyperpigmentation) on our skin? If you find yourself with some hyperpigmentation from a little too much sun this summer, fret not, there are ways to get rid of them (at the very least, lighten them). There are many effective products and natural ingredients that can help. Read on to see how you can eliminate hyperpigmentation and prevent further UV damage!

OKOKO l'Elixir de Clare - brightening serum with AHA

What is Hyperpigmentation?

It's a term that describes a darkening or discoloration of the skin. Although it can occur on any part of the body, it is most commonly found on the face, neck, shoulders, or arms. This is because these are the areas most exposed to sunlight, which can cause damage to the skin cells, triggering an overproduction of melanin.

Hyperpigmentation isn't generally a severe condition and lasts about 6 months after initial sun damage occurs. However, it's important to try to prevent further damage as much as possible, as it can lead to long-term hyperpigmentation that is hard to reverse.

Ways to fade the look of Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation

There are plenty of powerful natural ingredients to fade the look of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Here are some of our favourite ones:

  • Vitamin C - One of the most effective ingredients to reduce the look of hyperpigmentation, Vitamin C stops the production of melanin in the skin by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called tyrosinase, thereby fading the appearance of dark spots.
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) - AHA are natural acids derived from citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons that help to break the bonds that hold dry, damaged skin cells and increase the rate of skin cell renewal. It's an  effective ingredient to exfoliate dead skin cells and brighten the skin.
  • Niacinamide - Niacinamide is a powerful ingredient in brightening the skin tone and reviving the skin's healthy texture.

  • Dragon's Blood - While Dragon's Blood doesn't directly reduce melanin production, it's an excellent ingredient for post-sun exposure. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial and choked with antioxidants, so it's fantastic at helping to soothe skin that has been compromised by sun exposure.

  • Willow bark extract - Willow bark helps to gently exfoliate the skin and  has antibacterial properties helping to reduce the look of small imperfections.

  • Retinol - Retinol helps boost skin cell turnover. Like Vitamin C, it also helps to reduce the production of melanin through tyrosinase inhibition.

The Key is Prevention

Ultimately, the key is to reduce your risk of hyperpigmentation by having a preventive routine. Make sure you wear SPF daily, even on cloudy or indoor days (UV rays can pass through glass windows). You can also try wearing protective clothing, including hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeve shirts that provide extra coverage and help keep your face and neck shaded.

For skincare, you can look for products that have UV-protection ingredients like OKOKO Summer Mist that's made with Lycopene and Venuceane (Microalgae) - an under-the-radar active that's derived from algae dormant and provides UV protection (it actually becomes more activated when the sun is hitting you!).

When it comes to building an effective skincare routine, remember consistency is key! Make sure you are diligent about your routine and application consistently.
